Every December, AFES runs their National Training Event, which is a fantastic opportunity for Christian students from all over Australia, and from elsewhere, to come together to share in fellowship, receive practical training in ministry, and hear from God’s Word. In Western Australia, we have the especially fantastic opportunity in having the option of travelling to and from NTE together on ‘BusTrip’.

The main feature of BusTrip is NTE in Canberra, and the Mission in Sydney that follows it. Fitting around this, we’ll also have a few days of free time in Canberra, Sydney and Katoomba + the great fun of the bus ride there and back together. NTE and Mission will take place from the 4th until the 12th of December, and BusTrip will be happening from the 28th of November to the 18th of December. There are options take the bus both ways or one way, or to fly both ways. BusTrip is a significant investment of time and money, but anyone who’s been can tell you that it is well worth it for the experience and training.

We’re quite excited to announce an event that is coming up towards the start of semester two. Together with the UWA Atheist and Agnostic Society, we are putting on a screening of the award-winning documentary, Collision. Collision follows a debate and book-signing tour featuring Christopher Hitchens and Douglas Wilson. It features footage from their debates, as well as footage from ‘behind the scenes’ and the general life of the tour.

The event will take place from 7pm on Thursday the 5th of August at the UWA Tavern. The movie will be screened from 7:30pm, and will be followed by a discussion between representatives from the UWA Christian Union and the UWA Atheist and Agnostic Society. This will be followed by time to continue discussion with your friends over a drink, in a casual environment.

This event promises to be a great opportunity to engage with any friends that are interested in relevant discussion, and to be a great starting point for you to create discussion with any of your friends. We hope that you’ll embrace it, and that you’ll bring your friends along.

Because of the Tav’s licensing, this is an 18+ event. To cover the costs of booking out the Tav, and the movie license, an entry fee of $5 for Guild members and $6 for non-Guild members will be charged.

As Public Meetings start up again, we’ll be starting on a new series, focussing on the end of Mark’s Gospel. It will look at the final days of the life of Jesus, covering the last part of Jesus’ ministry, and culminating in His crucifixion and resurrection. This picks up where our series on Mark last year left off.

This semester, our main Public Meeting will remain at the same time, but our second meeting will be moving to 1pm on Wednesday, and will be in the Chapel Reading Room. The Reading Room is next to the UWA Chapel, and is on the 1st floor of the Guild village.

Week 1: Jesus Changes Everything (Mark 11)
Week 2: Jesus Under the Microscope (Mark 12)
Week 3: Signs of the End (Mark 13)
Week 4: God Prepares to Die (Mark 14)
Week 5: The Weekend that Changed the World (Mark 15-16)

It’d be great to see you at Public Meeting as we explore the end of this book together.

CU is getting together to celebrate the end of semester over dinner and take some time out to relax before exams! A time for fellowship, games, and general awesomeness. We will also hear from some CUers leaving for exchange, send off those graduating this semester, and have live entertainment.

It’s going to be happening on the 31st May (Monday of study week) at 5:30-8:30 at the Warehouse Café (221 Onslow Rd, Shenton Park), which we’ve booked out.

Tickets are $8 and will cover dinner (and dessert), and will be available at Public Meetings in week 13. Alternatively, you can RSVP to Ben Chaine (details below – if you RSVP using Facebook you will need to send him a message, RSVPing to the event won’t count).

If you need a lift to the Warehouse Café from uni and a lift home, contact Ben Chaine either by Facebook or by mobile (0413568577).

It should be a great time so we’d love to see you there and share it with you!

A series of talks from the greatest Jewish prophet (chapters 40-45 of Isaiah)

God’s been getting some pretty bad press lately. The atheist Richard Dawkins describes the God of the Old Testament as “arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

No wonder Dawkins is an atheist! But is that really what the God of the Bible is like? Or is He something completely different? To put it another way, is the God that Dawkins imagines just that – imaginary?

Nearly 2600 years ago, the great Jewish prophet Isaiah spoke of, and for, a very different kind of God. A God so powerful that He controls both good and evil. One so loving that He uses suffering to bring good. The one true God, who alone can satisfy our deepest longings.

Forget the imaginary God; come and see the real thing.

Week 10: Your God is too small
Week 11: The God who controls evil
Week 12: The God who uses suffering
Week 13: The God who satisfies

We hope to see you at Public Meeting as we look into one of the greatest books of the Old Testament together and learn more about the real God.
