Engaging with Jesus at universityfacebook (white)

The UWA Christian Union is a group of over 200 students on a mission to help students engage with Jesus at university.

We come from dozens of churches and denominations across Western Australia, but we’re united by our love for Jesus and our desire to see everyone grow in their love for him.

Whether you’ve known Jesus for years or are just starting to check him out, we’d love you to join us.

How can I get involved?

Join a small group

Small group Bible studies are the heart of CU. Every week you’ll get to meet with 8-10 people in your faculty to get to know each other, dig in to the Bible, and pray together. You can sign up now!

Come to Public Meetings

Thought-provoking talks from the Bible.

– Tuesdays 1pm in Murdoch Lecture Theatre (Weeks 1-6) or Tattersall Lecture Theatre (Weeks 8-12)
– Thursdays 12pm in the UWA Chapel (repeat of Tuesday meeting)

See the map to Public Meeting & the talk schedule

Come along to Missions!

Join us for a series of talks about how Christianity is more relevant than you think. From the existence of suffering in the world to the pursuit of happiness, we will have a number of academics addressing how Christianity fits in today’s world. All are welcome to attend and engage with the topics at hand, in a space where all perspectives and questions are welcome.

In light of the current Guild elections, we've asked the parties for their stances towards the topic of freedom of speech. Here are the statements we were given:

Star:
"We are all for people to freely expressing their political/religious/other beliefs, except where the expression of that belief is hate speech, or trivialises the experience of a marginalised group, in line with current Guild policy! [We] don't expect that this will create any problems for CU! Stuff like the seminar series that you have about people’s questions approaching Christianity encourage good discussion and engagement with faith and we think they are really great!"

Launch:
"The student body of UWA is diverse and represents a range of different perspectives. [Our] view is that the best way to protect these different groups is to ensure free speech is rigorously defended on campus. Consequently, Launch believes strongly in the right of groups such as CU to speak freely on matters of faith and conscience. [We] fully believe that universities ought to be places of open discussion and debate and that censorship is rarely an appropriate response to unpopular views. It would only be with great reluctance that Launch would ever sanction any form of censorship. That being said, Launch does not support speech that involves inciting violence against a particular person or group of people. Of course, such a restriction in no way impedes upon the freedom of clubs such as your own who seek to genuinely live out their faith in a respectful manner.

We understand that there has been some trouble at other universities around the state/country, where religious debate and discussion have been shut down, and that the Christian Unions/Clubs etc. are forced to disaffiliate. Launch will always be strongly opposed to any moves to disaffiliate/shut down CU, and we commit to ensuring that CU is able to continue hold weekly public meetings, small groups, and other activities. We believe that clubs and societies are what make campus life at UWA so great, so activities promoting this engagement will have our full support."

UWA Christian Union
Last night, our student committee made a feature on the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) FaceBook Page!

IFES are passionate about seeing the gospel shared and seeing students equipped to live lives for God's glory. They support locally-led student movements in over 160 different countries, including the Christian Union at UWA! Check them out! 😊🌏Building friendships is becoming increasingly challenging as the university is gradually shifting towards an online learning style. All our lectures are available online so it’s difficult to get to know people when they’re not on campus. Another challenge is that most Australians live pretty comfortable lives and don’t see much of a need for a god in their life. Pray that God will soften their hearts so that they would be willing to hear and engage with the good news of Christ Jesus!

We have had a number of students going through Uncover (sections of Luke’s gospel) this year with non-Christians. It’s great to see non-Christians eager to look into the Bible and find out who Jesus is and why he matters. Through reading Uncover, we’ve seen two students this year become Christians. It’s a joy to see God at work!
